FAQs For South West Heating Solutions Somerset, Devon & Perranporth

If you’re thinking about replacing your heating system, it’s only natural that you might have some questions. Please feel free to browse some of the most common ones below – or to give us a call if you prefer.
WHO DOES MY ECONOMY 7 METER EXCHANGE OR REMOVAL?

Some energy suppliers don’t even change the physical meters any more, they just alter the way they calculate your bill. However, if a meter exchange is required it can only be done by your energy supplier and is often a free (or relatively inexpensive) service which doesn’t take very long.

On install day our fitting team we will give you a crib sheet to help guide you through the process, and they’ll be on hand to support and advise you on how best to instruct your supplier if needed.

We can remove and safely dispose of your old night storage heaters, or arrange for a qualified plumber to remove your wet system. Some people like to keep their old night storage bricks to use in their gardens; they come in handy for barbecues, paths and garden projects.
The costs involved are very similar to having a central heating system installed, and in the same way, depend on the size of your home.
These types of heaters tend to have small unfluted surface areas and short warranties, so they are less effective, cost more to run and are not designed to last as long.
Economy 7 (or E7) heating gives you discounted overnight electricity but a more expensive daytime rate. A good single rate tariff is often far cheaper than its E7 counterpart

Yes of course we can, we fit Timeguard immersion timers as standard practice.
DO I HAVE TO DO ANYTHING BEFORE THE INSTALLATION TEAM ARRIVES?
Where possible, please try to make all workspaces clear. If you are unable to do this, don’t worry – we will do it for you and put everything carefully back in place before we leave. Turning off any night storage heater radiators that are due to be removed at least 24 hours prior to our arrival will also mean we can remove them safely on the day.

The key components in every ELKAtherm heater are backed by a free, 25-year warranty – underwritten direct by the manufacturers themselves, for complete peace of mind.

If there’s even the slightest problem with their workmanship your radiators be replaced or repaired free of charge by our experienced engineers.

Of course why not, they do say ‘two heads are better than one’.

ELKAtherm electric radiators save you money in three ways – using less energy, helping you waste less, and, potentially, cutting your other electricity costs.

The ingenious, fluted design multiplies each radiator’s effective surface area by five – spreading warmth evenly throughout the room using convection and radiation – while the high-grade ceramic core distributes heat across the whole surface. In short, you get much more heat from each Watt of power.

There’s no cheaper energy than the part you don’t use – and because ELKAtherm radiators are so easy to control from anywhere, you’ll naturally waste less.

Finally, because you don’t need to charge ELKAtherm radiators overnight, there’s no need for an Economy 7 electricity tariff and although cheap overnight electricity seems attractive, Economy 7 also raises your peak time electricity costs as much as 50%, increasing the cost of everything from ironing, to watching TV, to making a cup of tea.

Yes, good loft insulation, double-glazing and draught proofing all help prevent heat loss, so help reduce heating costs too.
We bring a sample radiator to your home when we carry out a home survey. We’ll have a RAL colour swatch with us too.

From Elkatherm Germany:

“Connection is done as a rule via an earthed 230 V socket. A 16 ampere fuse is required for a heating rating of 2500 watts and more. We recommend a socket with its own fuse that will only be used for the radiator heater. Only tested H05VV-F 3-1.5 mm2 cable should be used for the connecting cables. The accessories that were included in the scope of supply should be used for the installation of the electric heater. Never use adhesives for the installation. An ideal installation area is an outer wall of a room to ensure an even distribution of heat throughout the room. Alternatively, installation on inside walls is also possible, but this can lead to poor circulation of the warmth within the room. We recommend operation using thermostats that are available separately to ensure even heating in the room. The surface of the radiator heater heats up to a maximum of 70 °C, so there is no risk of burns. Ensure nonetheless that the socket that the radiator heater has been plugged into must always be easily accessible. The radiator heater may not be set up immediately underneath wall sockets; we suggest a safe distance of 30 cm as a guideline value. Ensure that the radiator heater is not covered during operation, as that would cause a risk of fire. Note when installing electric heaters in bathrooms that the heater must be set up at a safe distance from the bathtub, shower or bathing pool to ensure that it cannot be operated by persons in them. However, the radiator heater is protected against sprayed water. The room thermostats are to be installed such that they cannot be touched by a person in the bathtub or in the shower. It is necessary to comply with the stipulation of VDE 0700, part 701 in the installation. In the case of a fixed installation there must be an all-phase circuit breaker in accordance with the installation regulations and which meets overvoltage category III. Please note that the connection of an electric radiator heater or the connecting of replacement of the mains connecting cable may only be done by a qualified electrician. Comply with the regulations of the local electricity utility. If the mains connecting cable for the radiator heater is damaged, this must be replaced either by the maker, his after sales service section, or a qualified electrician.

Attention: Electrical appliances contain pollutants and valuable resources. Each consumer is therefore required by law to take used electrical appliances to a designated collecting or acceptance point, for example, at the local recycling centre. Used electrical appliances are accepted there free of charge (in Germany) and are send on for recycling to save resources and the environment.”
